Frostburg reminds me a lot of where I grew up. It's a small town
with a lot of mountain ranges that remind me of Eastern Tennessee and
North Carolina. They have a Deep Creek Lake here and in my hometown I
grew up right next to Deep Creek. I think I'm going to like it here.
We had a welcoming ceremony that the entire town participated in.
The team rode a train into Frostburg from Cumberland, Maryland, about a
40 minute ride, and the town was there to greet us at the train station.
Darrell Green and I spoke to the crowd at the station. I only spoke for
about a minute, but I wanted to let them know that on behalf of the team,
it was a good feeling to see the entire town get together to host this
event. After the speeches, which also included one from the Governor of
Maryland, we rode in a parade through the town and to Frostburg State
University, the site of our training camp. It was an awesome site. There
were Redskin flags, banners, and pictures on every store and home along
the parade route. It's great when you get to meet people like that and
put a smile on their face.
We got back to the campus late in the afternoon and had our first
meeting with our coaching staff in the evening. Norv spoke to us about
being a more physical team this year. From an offensive standpoint, it
means running the football more. Last year we passed and passed to set up
the run and in most games, never got the running game going. This year we
want to run 50% and pass 50%. I got in bed about 9:30 and looked at my
playbook for a while and read some from the Bible and was asleep by 10.
That's me. Ten o'clock comes and I'm ready for bed.

We started two a day practices today. This is, of course, a first
for me. Last year I missed the first two weeks of camp without a
contract. After one day I can tell you it is a real difference from last
year. Without a doubt things already are going a lot smoother, after just
one day. I understand the offense so much more and recognize the
coverages and secondary drops. When you're reading a book you don't read
from chapter 13 to 15. I started at chapter 13 last year. Now, I'm at
chapter one. I'm continuing the story. It's a plus. I can be focused.
That's the big thing for me this year. My most important goal of the
season: Stay focused. I'm going to work hard, and I have been since February.

On the way over to practice in the morning I left my dormitory
room wearing my backpack when a young kid came running over to me,
obviously to get an autograph. He got right up next to me and then turned
quickly away and went back to a group of other kids he had been with. I
heard him say, "No, that's not Heath, its just a student." I had to
laugh. The people up here are rabid football fans, they just don't know
the Redskins all that well yet.
We had an intrasquad scrimmage in the final hour of the afternoon
practice today. I missed a few passes early, but on each of the last two
series we scored touchdowns. I threw a 45 yard touchdown pass to Leslie
Shepherd, one of our young receivers. It was far from a perfect day, but
I already feel so much better than last year. We had the night off, and a
big group of us went out to dinner to a very good Italian restaurant in
Frostburg. Some of the offensive linemen: John Gesek, Vernice Smith, Tre
Johnson, Joe Patton, and hard working running back Cedric Smith were
there and we had a great meal. Our head coach Norv Turner was also having
dinner there with his young son and after we paid the bill, we told the
waitress to take the bill over to Norv and tell him we expected him to
pay. Norv laughed about it, and said "Ok this one is on me," and was
going to pay it until the waitress let the cat out of the bag. It got all
of us a good laugh. It tells you something about Norv. He is a very
intense football man, but is also a well rounded person, with a good sense
of humor. I can tell you everyone on the team has a great deal of respect
for him and his desire to rebuild this team. I feel lucky to have him as
the guy guiding my career.

We practiced with the Steelers today at their training camp in
Latrobe, Pennsylvania, about two hours by bus from Frostburg. It was the
hottest day af camp so far. It was somewhere in the mid 90's. We didn't
get return to camp until 8 p.m. It was a long day but we had a big team
barbecue when we got there. The weather cooled off by that time and we
had a great evening.
Although today's practice with the Steelers was different, we've
pretty much settled into training camp routine. On Mondays, Wednesdays
and Fridays we practice twice a day at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesdays and
Thursdays are weight lifting and a walkthrough in the morning and one
practice at 4 p.m. Dinner is about 6:30 p.m. I'm trying to eat as much as
I can to maintain my weight. I'm trying for about 5,000 calories. After
dinner I have two meetings. One is with our quarterback coach Cam
Cameron. We look at film of the day's practice and go over every little
detail. Right now we are paying particular attention to reading the
actions defensive backs make before the snap. Looking to see what kind of
gestures they make and if they mean anything. After that's over, we have
another meeting with the entire offensive team and go over the practice
films again. By the time I get to my room its about 9:45 p.m. and I
usually make a few phone calls before going to bed. I call my brother
Bennie, every day. He's taking classes at UT this summer.
Wednesday July 26
Everywhere I went today, all everybody wanted to ask me about was
the story about Bessie McFarland. She was the elderly lady who wrote the
letter to the editor of the Knoxville Times thanking me for helping her
get home to Knoxville from Baltimore. Everybody wanted to talk about it.
My teammates were asking if I could help them get airline tickets. When
practice was over this morning, I spent twenty minutes with the media and
all they wanted to ask me about was how I helped Mrs. McFarland. Then I
did an interview with ESPN's Keith Oberman and he mentioned it. It was
really a nice thing for her to do, thanking me through the newspaper, and
I'm grateful, but it was the way I was raised. I came from a strict
environment, a Christian environment. My parents would expect me to do it
and I plan on raising my kids the same way. It was a long evening for
both us. But one thing was kind of funny. We went from Baltimore to
Atlanta and I was running through that huge Atlanta Airport with Mrs.
McFarland's luggage and my luggage with her about five minutes behind me.
I got to the gate and they had already closed it. The guy was from
Knoxville, the pilot was from Knoxville and the plane was going to
Knoxville, so I talked them into opening the door for me. So they opened
the door and then I said "By the way, I do have someone traveling with
me, but she's a little bit behind..."
I was a little bit embarrassed about the attention today, but I
do love to do things that will make people smile. Heck, that's what
football and the entertainment business is all about. Anyway, thank Mrs.
McFarland.

John Riggins spoke to the team before the practice today. He told
us to seize the moment. No matter how small the opportunity for success,
don't fail to recognize it and go for it. He has a real physical aura
about him even now well after his NFL career has ended. Everyone in the
room was listening. During practice, our new Safety James Washington came
over and told me he was reading me. He knew where I was going with the
ball. I was tipping him off. He helps me with me eyes a lot. James is
going to be a great addition. He went out and had T shirts made for the
whole team that say "Success '95 Hustle and Work Hard." And everybody
wears 'em.
Saturday, July 29
We have our annual scrimmage against the Steelers today. This one
was played at Frostburg State. Gus Frerotte and I shared the
quarterbacking duties. We only played first and 2nd year guys and the
inexperience showed a little bit. My first pass in the 7 on 7 drills was
intercepted by Rod Woodson. That guy also had two against me in the 7 an
7's we had in Latrobe, the Steelers training camp, when we practiced
there earlier this week. Well, I guess the guy was an the NFL's all-time
team for a reason.
Then we had the scrimmage and overall I was pretty pleased. For
the most part I thought I was patient and quick with the ball, but a
couple of times I got caught up trying to make the big play when I
probably should have taken a higher percentage play. I wound up
completing eight of 13 passes for 72 yards and one touchdown. I threw on
8-yard touchdown pass to Olanda Truitt. Gus played pretty well, too.
We've had a very good relationship the two seasons we've been together. I
go out and do my best and help Gus when I can. He does the same thing.
We're good at picking each other up and encouraging each other to make
the plays. And it's good for the team. Very seldom these days does a team
have a quarterback play all 16 games. We need to be strong at 1 and 2.
The worst news of the day came when our second round draft pick,
Cory Raymer, a center from Wisconsin broke his ankle in the first five
minutes. This guy is going to be a really good player. He just signed his
contract four days ago. Then he breaks his leg.
Sunday, July 30th
Sunday was an off-day for us after the Pittsburgh scrimmage. Last
night several of my teammates (guard Vernice Smith, quarterback Trent
Green and guard John Gesek) and I went out to dinner at a local
restaurant and then went to see the movie Waterworld. Now I'm not a movie
critic, but I wouldn't go back to see it again.
Sunday was off until evening meetings. I went out and bought some
detergent and did my laundry, watched a movie and looked at our films
from Saturday's scrimmage with the Steelers. It was mainly looking at
little details, some finer things. The one touchdown pass I threw
probably wouldn't have occurred last season. I wouldn't have gone through
the whole progression of the play, wouldn't have had the patience to wait
and instead get happy feet, throw it in the dirt, or throw it to the
wrong guy. Mostly it was a day of relaxation. Tomorrow we will start
looking at films of the Chiefs our first preseason opponent next
Saturday. Of course, after that game it's back to University of Tennessee
for the Oilers, just two weeks away. I ordered up a rented golf cart to
get around campus, then when it came I gave it to two of my protectors
Gesek and Vernice Smith. I think it was a good move, they drive it to the
meetings and I end up with seat most of the time. The day ended with a
team barbecue outside. The evening was beautiful with the sun setting
over the mountains, and heaping plates of steak, fish, corn, baked
potatoes, sausage and pitcher of lemonade and iced tea. Then it was back
to more meetings.
