Notes: Four-year starter who redshirted in 1993 and missed the end of the '95 season after breaking his left leg in Game Nine vs. Pittsburgh. Second-team All-Big East in '95 and '96 and All-Conference in '97. Had 122 stops and one sack as a freshman; 111 tackles, a sack and an interception before getting hurt in '95; 90 tackles and 5 1/2 sacks in '96; and 119 tackles and two sacks in '97. Declined to work out at the combine but will work on Syracuse's very fast-timing surface later. Has run 4.6 on that surface at 240 pounds in the past.
Positives: Good athlete. Adequate size. Good speed. Appears to have all the physical tools. Has stretches when he shows you everything from a physical standpoint you want to see from a middle backer. Big hitter with good range. Can go sideline to sideline and get depth in his pass drops. Has stretches when he plays at a very high level.
Negatives: Hot-and-cold player. Has too many periods when he is late to react and plays slower than his 40-time because he waits to see the play unfold before reacting to it. Had a very difficult childhood and still has a problem controlling his anger at times. Is not always that coachable or easy to get along with.
Summary: Has the tools to play and shows you how good he can be in spurts, but he also has long periods when he looks like a marginal player.
The Redskins final pick was Syracuse inside linebacker Antwaune Ponds.
Rated by many publications as the fifth best inside linebacker available, Ponds was a potential second-round pick before his senior season. A buzz regarding Ponds attitude hurt his draft stock
``You have to take this guy in the seventh round,'' Casserly said.
