Keep The Name & Tradition Alive
We should not change the name. It has been associated with this team for approximately 60 years and has a lot of history attached to it.
Furthermore, the only reason advanced for changing the name is that the word "Redskins" is offensive to American Indians. Well, I have spoken to, and heard from, a number of American Indians all of whom said that that suggestion was ridiculous. This does not mean that there aren't groups who are advancing that idea for reasons of their own. But in the final analysis, words are only a means to communicate ideas. And when one hears the words "Washington Redskins", the only idea conveyed is that someone is talking about this particular professional football team. No one in his right mind thinks that the speaker is referring to American Indians.
To put it another way, if you are indeed talking about American Indians, and you use the term "Redskin", it is apparent that you are being insulting. And such language is to be decried. But on the other hand, if you use the words "Washington Redskins", in reality you cause discomfort only to Dallas fans.
