Jon Drenning's Report on Johnson

Johnson has excellent size and is fairly nimble footed for a 300 plus
lineman, and has the potential to become a very good tackle in the NFL
with added experience. Aside from his size, he has long, muscular arms,
looks smooth when setting for pass protection and showed the ability to
mirror the Bid Ten's best pass rushers. He also does a good job of
locking into his man and holding his ground when bull-rushed. However, he
has only two years experience as a starter, lacks real good speed, has
some difficulty blocking on the move, and has a tendency to overextend
and lose his balance at times. Strong bullrushers have also been known to
give him some trouble to the inside.

Mel Kiper, Jr.'s notes on Johnson

Notes: Prep All-American. Gatorade Circle of Champions Player of the Year
as a two-way lineman in New York state. Redshirted in 1991 while working
with the "foreign" (scout) team as a defensive tackle. Had four stops and
two tackles for loss in 92. Moved to offense in '93 and started the last
three games, including the Citrus Bowl. Started every game at tackle in
'94 and shut out Illinois' Simeon Rice. Second-team All-Big Ten offensive
tackle in '95, when he only allowed one sack.

Positives: Durable and dependable. Plays every down. Good athlete. Can
bend his knees and play with balance. Good ability to position and
sustain. Understands blocking angles. Efficient pass blocker who rarely
gives up a sack. Did a great job on Rice in '94, holding him at bay while
QB Kerry Collins led Penn State to a dramatic comeback win over the
Illini. Became a more physical blocker in '95.

Negatives: Is not built to be a real power blocker. A little thinner and
narrower than scouts would like in the lower body. Is not that strong in
the upper body and has a high center of gravity. Is not always firm or
stout. Lacks great range and mobility. Will look awkward at times.

Summary: Has the size and pass-blocking skills to start on the next level,
but he needs to improve as a run blocker. Also needs to avoid the
occasional plays when he looks awkward pass-blocking and is off balance

NFL Homepage notes on Johnson:

Came to Penn State as a DL in 91...Moved to OL during spring practice in
Ô93...Does not have good lower body development for a man his size...Needs
more strength to become an outstanding player...A good, but not great,
athlete...Did a great job against Simeon Rice at Penn State in 94 come
from behind victory against Illinois...On the winning drive in this game,
Kerry Collins completed seven straight passes due, in large part, to the
job Johnson did on Rice...His plus heading into the NFL is his pass
blocking.

USA Today's report says:

Displays the footwork and body control to easily adjust to the pass
rusher's moves. . .Has an explosive initial burst that allows him to fire
out to neutralized the linebackers. . .Shows quick feet, smooth movement
in reverse and fine knee bend in pass protection. . . All-Big Ten
Conference second-team pick by the coaches as he saw action in every game
at the left tackle position. . .Posted 97 knockdowns as he graded 93% for
blocking consistency. . .Played a major role as the team averaged 208.4
yards rushing per game.
